When you think of an orchestra, you're probably picturing very refined woodwinds, brass, and strings. But one ensemble from South America is made up mostly of kids who play instruments made out of actual trash. This is the Recycled Orchestra from Cateura, Paraguay, and their group is the subject of a new documentary film. Cateura is not a town; it is a slum alongside a landfill. Every day, about 3 million pounds of solid waste get dumped there. Many families eke out their existence by scavenging trash from the landfill to resell, and kids regularly get pulled out of school to help. A local garbage picker Nicolás Gómez began experimenting with instruments he constructed from trash. Under his supervision, these utterly impoverished kids make beautiful music on instruments constructed almost entirely out of materials reclaimed from the dump. 1. Use context clues to determine the meaning of "ensemble". 2. Use context clues to determine the meaning of "impoverished". 3. What type of trash would you use to create musical instruments. Why?
