A loop is recorded audio or sound that is usually repeated over and over. Musicians can use loops to layer different melodies and accompaniments in complex ways to create elaborate musical compositions. Recording technology has become so advanced that many musicians can create loops during performances using just one instrument to create music that sounds like an entire ensemble of people is playing. This technology has augmented the ways music can be created and performed.

In electroacoustic music, a loop is a repeating section of sound material. Short sections of material can be repeated to create ostinato patterns. A loop can be created using a wide range of music technologies including synthesizers and sequencers, or they can be programmed using music software. While repetition is used in the musics of all cultures, the first musicians to use loops were electroacoustic music pioneers such as Edgard Varèse and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Stockhausen's music influenced The Beatles to experiment with tape loops; their use of loops in early psychedelic works brought the technique into the mainstream. 1. What is an "ostinato"? 3.
